The NYPL recently held a screening of Emile de Antonio’s documentary “Painters Painting” (1973) on April 12.
“The film highlights the works and processes of artists such as Willem de Kooning, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Helen Frankenthaler, Frank Stella, and Andy Warhol. What I found most interesting about this documentary was Antonio’s approach to the topic of abstraction, he really takes the time to facilitate meaningful and cohesive discussions on the topic. Given the time this documentary was filmed I feel it really broke ground on understanding the movement, and his care in taking into consideration the processes of these artists is sensitive to the period in which they were made. The very reactionary quality of the first hand accounts present within resonate very well with the points we’ve discussed in class.”
